I've already raised my concerns and dissatisfaction with the cruiser slots changes since their first debut in the test server, but I'll now raise them publicly and open a discussion about this.

The cruiser slot changes are a downgrade to cruiser gameplay because:

They limit loadout options. The impact cannons, storm cannons and shards now only fire side/back, and there's no direct counterpart to them for the heavy offensive turrets. You can no longer mount a forward-firing 1.0 hybrid cannon, a kinetic hull buster, or shotgun, as examples.

Single heavy-slotted cruisers have limited flexibility. Now you must make the very hard choice of mounting only a single forward firing gun: A mortar is better for attacking at longer ranges, tachyons are better for chasing gunboats and consistent hit rate, a missile is very useful in group battles and for surprise head-on attacks. You can no longer have situational forwarding firing guns for such ships: you're forced to use your back guns, reposition yourself, or hit the nearest massive solar object like a planet to escape your painful existence.

Inviabilizes mounting missiles in single heavy-slotted cruisers. I can no longer feasibly mount a missile because I completely lose heavy projectiles to my front, which is an enormous disadvantage. With version 5.0 360 guns, I could cover all sides with heavy projectiles to alleviate the problem, but not anymore.

"The changes were made to discourage cruiser tail chasing" you might argue, but limiting loadout options is the worst way possible of doing this. I'd very much prefer cruiser mines or a frontal weak spot in cruisers akin to battlecruisers. Alternatively, allow mounting ex-360 degree weapons (tachyons, solaris gattling, blaster, repeater, etc) on any slots, be those heavy or defensive.

to be honest I find it refreshing that cruisers aren't the class that can do everything for the first time in two years, speaking as the original cruiser rework abuser. I'm curious to see how they end up playing out as the patch meta progresses.

At least, cruiser heavy guns can now cover both your front and back.

I think it's too early to make conclusions.

Fab, to be honest, you - as a playtester - never actually participated in any cruiser playtesting. You hopped on once, tried to shoot Storm Cannons forwards, established that the fact that you couldn't was the worst possible change we could make, and then proceeded to never show up ever again. And now you're here lobbying for changes without actually spending any time playing the patch.

Give it a chance. Play it. See how it actually works out. I think Cruisers are fun and refreshing, and really enjoyed my time testing them and am looking forward to trying them on live. I think a weakspot in the back paired with super-strong defensive turrets creates a more interesting environment for all types of fights. I think the "loadout variety" argument is just wrong, as there are bound to be more actually viable loadouts now than in 5.0.

But yeah. An opinion based on more than 15 seconds of playtime would be appreciated.

You don't need to drink the entire bottle to realize it's bad. Back when this idea was announced I immediately voiced my feedback as a playtester only to be hinted that I don't know any better. I only have 2 recent years of gameplay, you kept playing since I first joined 11 years ago, and perhaps I truly don't know any better.

I stopped joining the multiplayer test server because my opinions as a playtester on gameplay were always set aside, and I felt that my presence there wasn't necessary. Cruisers were the only class that I could comfortably say that I played well, but with the sudden weapon changes, everything that I learned during the previous year became obsolete because of a change that I personally think could've been avoided or handled in a different way. I'm sure this frustration I feel regarding the changes is reasonable.

Our tastes when it comes to balance are different and that is to be expected. I enjoyed the simplicity and straightforwardness of 4.95 and 5.0 and I was never bothered by that, you and the other devs probably were. I'm not a dev, and I understand that my words, opinions and feedback have no value until a developer agrees with them.

Feel free to call me a bitter vet.

I mean, reading between the lines a bit here this really comes across as you just wanting the old cruisers back which were objectively the best capital class in the game both in a duel and in a group setting. Their simplicity came from pure ease of use to be completely honest.

Okay, very well, I'll answer your question with a question. Why is being able to sit behind, for example, a gunboat, and click it away with 4 storm cannons without any further depth or interactivity than that a good and healthy balance state?
