There's been a colossal downtick of what most people would consider fairplay in PvP engagements, where if one side starts to have an advantage, instead of players (particularly those in factions, both official and unofficial) removing themselves from the fight to keep things balanced they simply continue to steamroll the fight. This is easily the largest issue with PvP right now, because while it discourages the side that got rolled from even participating unless they have a numbers parity, it also in the long run discourages the portion of those that are on the winning side that want a long term fight from participating as well. OFs and Unofficials need to either step up their standards and pull ships off to give their opponent a reasonable chance when a roll starts to happen, or we need to give up the pretense at trying to have fair fights entirely.
there's no problem with PvP balance. the problem has, is and always will be the dipshits. and this place has a whole lot of them. that's why you make events with pre-determined slots where people can sign up while you yourself regulate the numbers if they aren't balanced.
supposedly you should've learned that lesson with the thuringia event. discovery's playerbase simply can't be relied on to balance the fights.
i don't believe this advice will reach your EXALTED selves but hear me out - there once was an event in Texas VR system where people could buy any kinds of ships for the event participation only, capships included. maybe try doing that again if people don't have ships for the opposing sides.

I've only had one experience with these events, and while it was fun, it was frustrating. The OC side just... did not coordinate at all. No pre-planning, and requests for a bomber target were denied in a fight against something like a dozen capships. I don't know if that issue has continued, as that's the only time I've flown in this event, but if so the outcome is unsurprising.

it's impossible. this very same conversation resurfaced a lot of time through the years in the forums and monthly/weekly on every faction discord server ever.
discovery freelancer is simply not built for matchmaking. It's all up to the players, and when everyone got their own personal notion of fair play and rules of engagement, no one has. there's no rules.
The problems with PvP on Disco are the same problems had in every other PvP game.
Most players are knuckleheads and many others are just A-holes.
Everyone is out to do what they want and get personal glory. Being on the same side doesn't mean they're on the team.
The only thing I've read here that rings true is that team communication and coordination by a good leader allows average players to punch above their level. I say this as an RL combat veteran. Shoot, Move, Communicate is a military credo for reason, when the lack of it means real Death.
That being said, I've also found that getting players to do this is like pulling teeth.
If you're not coordinating as a unit and are getting wrecked, that's why. If you refuse to try it, kwitcherbitchin.
Also, self regulation requires self discipline. Knuckleheads generally don't have it and A-holes thrive on conditions where it doesn't exist, have no desire to be fair, and just enjoy wrecking things for other players. And we have no small number of those around here.
Back in the day people used to have ships in most factions so when a fight happened they could swap around to balance, that way both parties could have fun and continue having more interactions. Lately it's become the case to just pile on a already weakened group instead of switching, in such cases the other party will just not log to give free blues, these situations were greatly exacerbated during this event where it was 22v9 in some cases.
Only solution is for people to realize this is a small community and the other side won't just get players out of thin air and switch to balance, also not be afraid of dying. It's just a game.

do not gank
do not restock (carrier is ok)
do not combatdock (unless ganked)
do not acestack - you know who you are
do not wait for more enemies, take the initiative and switch sides
do not engage in a fair fight - sit it out until your side starts losing. alternatively, engage the opposite side's reinforcements
feel free to add more onto my list
most importantly, DO NOT CONTINUE THE GANKCYCLE, sometimes shit happens, we cant control indies, if you see that a rowdy bunch of them are not listening, take the initiative and disengage yourself, let them take the heat. THE COMMUNITY HAS TO SELF-REGULATE, if it doesn't then it will downspiral to some of theawful engagements the event had.
oh, and don't be afraid to get blued, its just a VIDEO GAME.
It's very rare to see a thread completely nailed in the first response.
Probably the most important comment in this entire discussion:
Quote:DO NOT CONTINUE THE GANKCYCLE
"They did it first" is the worst excuse possible. We're a small community, most of us know each other by this point. It'd be nice if we could all agree to a sort of relationship reset and try a fresh start without immediately falling back into cliques that are out to get each other.
Strive for excellence and make the game fun for others and that effort will be recognised and reciprocated. Piling on a group because you were previously piled on simply ensures the cycle continues and the game gets saltier and more antagonistic for everyone, including randoms that get caught up in the pissing match through no fault of their own.
As an extremely important signature image says, "it's a game, I can die."
