Isa was Pleased as she saw the Books in Mac´s arms when they exited the Library. She knew that it might be a bit out of her authority as a Teacher to Demand something like this, but she knew that Mac looked up to her and this one time she would use this to give her a little nudge in the right direction. Isa herself Liked the Books that she had chosen a lot, she herself had also Read them a couple of times. And she knew that Mac would need this kind of Relaxation after a long and exhausting workday. Especially as she would show her the Women´s Refuge next and knew how shocking this place could sometimes be for those that go there for the First Time.
She smiled calmly at the inhabitants of the Women's Refuge, she knew most of the women pretty well by now so they accepted the fact that Mac was with her by now. She knew that they would warm up with Mac once they had seen her a couple of times. The Women of the Refuge had suffered a lot in the past and they were really suspicious of anyone new. In the Refuge they felt safe as they knew that they were protected and that no one wasn't allowed to come into it. But still, it was sometimes hard for them to trust new Nurses or Doctors. But she knew that they would love Mac once they knew her, the warm and friendly Personality of Mac would take their Hearts by Storm. Isa was sure that Mac could be a Benefit for them and could help them a lot.
Isa: Yes they see you as a Stranger right now, and Strangers are a Danger to them. But they also know that I would bring no one here that would Harm them. But Fear isn't a Rational thing so to them you are a Dangerous Person right now, at least till they know you better. And that is exactly the Reason why you are not allowed to come here on your own. The Only Reason why a lot of them aren't back in their Cabins already is that I am with you. When you have experienced what they have then a Simple Shadow can send you into Panic sometimes. I haven't experienced the things that Doctor Wilke Haves, but she Designed that Place after her own Experiences. She made sure that there were no Dark Corners where someone could Hide, and she made sure that we didn't use Alcohol or anything that Smells Similar. A lot of the Men that did this were Alcoholics or used Drugs, but not all of them, some were simply Sadistic Assholes. She smiled at Mac and took her hand. I hope you will never have a case where you must treat a Woman who has experienced what they have. But sadly the Statistics indicate that you might have to do exactly that. And Sadly another Statistic shows that a lot of Doctors overlook the Warning Signs. They don't see it because they don't know what to look for, or because they choose to Ignore them because they can't believe that the Picture Perfect Family they know has these Kinds of Problems and they don't want to accuse someone they might know. Sadly there are many reasons why good people ignore the Obvious Warning Signs. But I want you to be prepared should it ever happen.
She said with a grim smile as she went with her out of the Women's Refuge and to the Church. Isa knew that Mac would never overlook the warning signs and she knew that she would always be there for her people. She wouldn't let the Fear Hold her back and would fight like hell for her patients. Mac was a Diamond in the Rough and she would be a Great Doctor one day, and she would do her absolute best for her Patients. But Isa also knew that she would need to make sure that Mac Learns how to Realx or her career might be only a short one. She would hear some of the most Sad and Disturbing Stories as a Psychologist and if she couldn't find something in her free time to Vent all of that Stress then she would have a Breakdown sooner rather than Later. Isa had already noticed some of the Early Warning Symptoms of that on Mac and she would do all that she could to not let it end like that.
That was also the reason why Isa had Brought Mac to the "All Faiths Chapel" She knew that her Religion was an Important Vent for Mac and that it might help her when she was stressed. And by the way that Mac Looked at the Chapel, she was right. Isa would hold back as they entered and Explored the Church. She could see how this place amazed her and how Mac seemed to look everywhere to see all the details of the Church. Harlan was a nice guy and would sit down with her listen carefully as Mac Explained her Religion to him and nod here and there when he seemed to agree with her. He was an old man and his Face showed many Wrinkles and signs of his age. He would be maybe in his Late 50ts and was and looked like he would Laugh a lot and was a happy guy. He looked at her like a friendly father would look at his child.
Harlen: If you want you can call me by the name that you use for the Priests of Deux. Although I am not consecrated to only one religion, I serve everyone in the same way. if you want I can create a corner for Dexu in the Chappel, and maybe Build a Shrine or whatever is used in the Religious Worship of Deux. I try to give everyone a Space to pray and do the Kind of Religious Service they need. I can also offer you some Preaches if I can get my hands on Religious Texts and get some time to Read and Understand them. I might not be as good as a Consecrated Priest, but I do my best to serve you the best I can.
He would nod as she told him about the Big Enemy and the way that they hoped to Unite Mankind against them. To Have a Great Evil was a common thing among many religions, but the Followers of Deux knew what that Evil was, which was a pretty rare thing. This was something that impressed him and she had to think about her words for a while. But he could also see that the Religion of Deux was one of Compassion and wanted to help the people. He could Respect that and it was refreshing to see that her Religion wasn't just about the big Evil and that they had to fight it, but also about helping others and making the lives of those who had a piece of bad luck in life a bit better.
Harlen: The Great Evil is something that is Something that many Religions have in Common, Devils, Demons, and Evil Spirits, many Religious stories from Countless Religions tell the tale of Evil. Mostly it's just a Metaphor to make people think about their lives or to tell a story about things that should be avoided or to tell a Moral Story. But the Religion of Deux is the first one that I met in my life that actually Knows what the Evil Is and that not just have a Vague Image of it. The way you describe your Religion is wonderful and Excites me to learn more about it. I want to learn so that I can not only serve your Religious needs but also the ones of those that come after you. Maybe we get Visitors or Patients that believe in Deux and I want to be there for them as well.
I myself have spent many years in this Universe and have experienced many things, I also have one story of an encounter with Evil and how the Faith Safed me. I was still a young Boy as I lived on a Zoner Outpost deep in the Borderworlds. It was a Recently Established Station that had no more than a couple of Families Lived on board. We were an Easy Target for Pirate and Lunatics. And so it came in the end. We had no Defense Platforms and only some old outdated Defense Turrets on the Station. And so it came that we got under attack from a Pirate Gang that thought we would be an easy and Lucrative Target. The Station was under attack for Hours and we had lost all hope by then, 3 of us were Dead and the Rest were injured, the Defense Turrets were Destroyed and the Station was burning in Several Locations. All that we had left was to Pray for our Salvation. And each Family started to Pray to a Different God. They all Preyed on different Gods with different Names and still, we all Preyed on the Same thing and hoped that this Higher Being that we had devoted our life to would Save us. Believe it or not, that was exactly what happened, then out of Nothing Appeared a Zoner Carrier and Blew up all the Pirates. We thought they might have heard our Maday Calls or had hunted the Pirates. But as we later learned they came to us because of the captain's gut feeling. Something inside him had told him to Visit this Faraway Outpost and that he should have his Ship battle-ready when they reached it. And of course, every Family believed that it was their God that had saved them as they heard this. But I personally believe that it was the fact it was the Belive itself that saved us. And that was the beginning of the "All Faiths Chappel", After I recovered I went on a Journey to Learn as much as I could about the Different Religions of Sirius. I have met those who Believe in the Religions of the old Earth and those who Believe in the new ones that Developed in Sirius, I even once sneaked into Gallia to Learn about their beliefs as well. This was back in the Days of the Crazy King, and Let us say I was Lucky that the police officer who Caught me only brought me back to the Border.
Harlen smiles at her and then goes and returns a couple of minutes later with a Tray and 3 Cups of Tea. The Cups had Buddhist Symbols on them but as with everything in this Chappel they also had other Symbols on them too, all of them seemed to have something to do with Peace and Healing.
Harlen: I thought Tea might be a good idea now after we have talked so much. This is a wonderful mix that a Monk in Kusari once Served me after we talked about God and Life till the Sun had Risen over the Horizon. He told me it was a Mix that would Benefit Health and a Long Life. I drink it every day in the Hopes that I also grow as old as he did, I mean he was 107 years old when I met him.
He said with a smile as he sipped from his cup of tea and Isa did the same. The Tea had a floral taste, with a sweet note that made you think of flower fields on a warm summer day. It was Refreshing and Calming and was one of the Simple joys of life. He really enjoyed the talk with Mac and the opportunity to learn things about her and about the beliefs of Deux. It was Rare that he met someone who Believed in a Religion that he had never encountered before, so this was a bit Like an Early Christmas for the Old man. He looked forward to having many talks with Mac and to give her the Best Religious Service that he could.
Mackenzie appreciated Harlen's eagerness to help and his voluntariness. The truth is that the existence of that chapel and that curious priest had been a complete surprise for her. She was so used to her beliefs causing rejection among the majority of the disbelieving people of Sirius she had met, that finding a temple dedicated to all religions on a ship owned by a scientific and medical organization had left her disconcerted.
It was clear that those times of technological advances and science that could explain everything were not the best times to have faith in something inexplicable, but Mac had always thought that scientific progress was not incompatible with believing in something superior. She was glad that in an environment like Healing Heart she could find someone to discuss religion with, and a place to do so.
Wilson adressed to Harlen. "Our priests have various names depending on their ranks, but those who normally take care of the liturgies are simply called clerics." She paused a little, and hesitated. She didn't want to offend that good man. "However, I think it would not be appropriate for me to call you that way, you are not consecrated under the Light of Deux. Our rites... have sacraments that can only be officiated by a consecrated priest, they cannot be performed by just anyone." She offered a smile. "However, to pray Deux it's not necessary for a consecrated priest to be present. Although a canonical mass must be led by a cleric, we don't need to do that, it's not mandatory for believers to attend an official ceremony. For me it's enough to have someone to accompany me in my prayers. I can teach you prayers of my Faith and part of the liturgy that those of us who aren't members of the clergy can perform." She made a gesture encompassing the chapel. "And I would love it if we could build a little corner here dedicated to Deux. We aren't a big religion currently , but we're growing slowly. Who knows if another believer will ever end up here. I know it will be a great comfort for him to find a place to worship Deux."
Mac listened carefully to the priest's words about the idea of Evil in religions, and nodded. "Well, that's right partly. Deux in His Holy Scriptures shows us a clear vision of Evil identified in the Great Enemy, as a threat to the very existence of Humanity. The Nomad are biomechanical, artificial entities, created by some evil power to conquer the universe and destroy us." She pointed determinedly. "The evidence of this is irrefutable. When they were awakened from their slumber by pacific humans who even were unaware of the Word de Deux, they simply attacked them without saying a word, and then tried to exterminate all of us humans on Sirius. Therefore the Nomads are a clear example of Evil Incarnate." Mac waved his hand, as if to indicate another point of view. "However, Deux teaches us that Evil is something that also exists among us, humans, His chosen race. We're very capable of destroying ourselves without the need for intervention from the Nomads. That's why Deux encourages us, His believers, to preach unity and peaceful coexistence between humans, through mutual help and understanding."
She looked down at the floor of the chapel, with a sad expression. Sometimes she felt real despair when thought of the heavy task that Deux entrusted to the believers of the Faith. "Actually, I consider that to be a very difficult objective, as difficult as the fight against the Nomad itself. There are many people who don't understand that the Nomad threat is something very serious, even here in the Border and Edge Worlds, and that doesn't realize that every time we massacre each other we make the work of the Nomads easier. They don't understand that if Humanity doesn't work together, we won't be able to win this battle for our survival as a species, not even with all the help and love of Deux. He gave us the Gift of Technology, and gave us the knowledge to prepare, but He cannot fight this battle for us. It's His Sacred Desire that we prevail, but only we can save ourselves."
Wilson realized the sadness she was expressing, and didn't want Harlen to think of her as a fatalist. She forced herself to smile at the priest again."Therefore, for us Evil is also an abstract concept in itself. The Nomads are the most obvious manifestation of it, since they were created for destruction, but in reality Evil is something that is always among us all, it accompanies us and is part of our essence. You can't end Evil, the key is to be able to keep it contained. And that's the fight that Deux entrusts to us, and to it we believers consecrate our lives. " She shrugged her shoulders. "After all, it's a fight that is worth it."
When Harlen began to explain to her how faith had once saved him from death, Mac began to understand why the man had taken that path of worshiping all religions. He didn't believe that salvation had come from just one of the faiths of those who had been present at that station, but from the joint exercise of all of them. Basically, what Harlen worshiped was Faith itself, regardless of who it was directed to.
The neurologist scratched her chin. "I understand what you mean, and what your belief is based on. You think that it is the strength of the human being's belief that grants salvation, and not so much whoever is the superior being or idea that is worshiped. It's a curious concept, one I've never heard of, but it makes sense with what you're trying to do here." She remained silent for a few seconds, reflecting, and then continued. "To be honest, yours it's a point of view about faith that I can understand. Those of us who believe in Deux don't think that He's the only superior entity in the universe, not even think that He's necessarily the most powerful. We whorship Him because He loved us and decided to favor us to try to preserve our race, showing us the only viable path to survival, but we accept the fact that other faiths can be as true as ours. That doesn't mean they're good, or bad, but they can be as real as the Faith of Deux. For us, Heresy doesn't occur when someone expresses an idea that Deux doesn't say, but when that idea is directly contrary to His Sacred Mandate."
Wilson looked at Harlen, and made a gesture showing her palms up, as if to highlight her words. "That's why I understand what you say about the power of faith, regardless of who you worship, although I see it more as that higher entities can favor those who address them, without needing to be exclusive." She swept her gaze around the chapel, recognizing the various symbols seen everywhere. "If we go back to the Ancient History of the Old Earth, monotheistic religions weren't the majority among human cultures. It was not until the arrival of Christianity and the expansion of this religion by force of arms, when the idea of a single true god began to be considered globally." Mac turned at the priest again. "But honestly, nowadays, when we know how vast the universe is, I can understand much more someone who thinks that there is no higher entity, than someone who thinks that there is only one. For me that's as unlikely as the idea that existed in the past about that Humanity was the only race inhabiting the universe."
Mac stayed sitting on the bench as Harlen apologized and stood up, walking away towards a small side door. She took the opportunity to immerse herself in prayer for a few moments and address Deux. She thanked for the opportunity she was receiving being at Healing Heart and asked for strength to complete her learning task successfully. She also prayed for Pygar, so that Deux would continue to watch over the planet and its inhabitants in the face of the threat of war, and finally she dedicated a few seconds to request spiritual help for the women of the Refuge, so that they would find the way to overcome the fear that their aggressors had caused them.
When she looked up, the old priest was approaching her again, carrying a tray with three steaming cups. Harlen sat down again and he offered one to Isa, and another to Mac, explaining that the drink was a special type of tea as well as the story behind it. Mac nodded her thanks and tasted the tea carefully so as not to burn her tongue. The hot drink had a relaxing effect on her, while also making her taste buds tingle with pleasure. They both silently took small sips, leisurely, just enjoying the stillness and peace that was perceived in that sanctuary.
Mac could have spent hours there, in complete harmony, simply enjoying Harlen's calming company. However, when finished her cup of tea, she placed it on the bench between them and smiled at the priest. "It's been a pleasure meeting you, Harlen." She shook his hand affectionately. "I've been very comfortable this moment, and I thank you with all my heart for this talk, and this place." She looked towards Isabella and Niki, who were waiting patiently for her to finish her conversation. "However I must leave now, I've just arrived and I still have to get settled properly. But rest assured that we'll see each other a lot here, this chapel is something I'll need to visit often throughout my stay." The neurologist stood up, picking up her backpack, which she had placed on the floor. Then she put her hand on the priest's arm. "Have a good day, Harlen, and may Deux be with you."
Harlen smiled and looked at her as they talked about the Belive of Deux, and how Harlan could help her with her religious beliefs and give her the Religious Space that she Deserves. He already had a Corner of the Church in mind that would Currently serve no Real Purpose so it could be easily transformed into a place that would be designated to worship Deux. He was delighted that he had met Mac on this day and that she was such an Open and friendly woman. He would love to have Discussions in the future and to see what both of them could learn from each other.
Harlen: I can understand that it could feel weird to see me equally as someone who had dedicated their whole life to the Belives of Deux. If you want you can see me as your Spiritual companion. I will do whatever is in my Power to enable you to have the kind of Religious Service that you need. I would be grateful if you taught me those Prayers and the Liturgy, maybe I can even get a Delivery of Religious Books and Texts from Pygar before we leave tomorrow so I can read them over the next weeks and get a deeper understanding of Deux. I have so Read Every Religious Book of the Religions that is Represented in this Chapple. Maybe we can even have some of the things we need for the Corner of Deux shipped from the Colony as well. But perhaps we do not have enough time for this before we leave the System Tomorrow.
The old man was really dedicated to his work as the Religious Caretaker of the Healing Heart and he was especially Dedicated to making sure that every Religious Person on board had a place to practice their Religion. So Mac could be sure that he would do his best and if that would mean that he would take a Shuttle Down to Faith Haven Itself then he would do this. He would sip on his tea and even this little thing seemed to take some years off his back as he listened to her explanation about the Nomad Threat and the Effects that the Splited Staus of Humanity had about the Fight against the Big Evil. He himself considered the Nomads an Existential Threat and was sure that they would not hesitate to Destroy even a Hospital Ship.
Harlen: Yes the Nomads are an Evil that is pretty Clear. But I also have met people in the past who have Worshiped them as Gods. I have to admit that these People were not part of a Religion, as I see it they were part of Cults and Sects. And I also can tell you that they have no part in this Chapple. But I fear that it is human Nature that we are never Truly United. I mean even during the most dire times of Humanity on Old Earth itself they couldn't Unite Everyone behind the same cause. But I am an Optimistic Man and I hope that you will Prove me wrong and that one day Humanity will be Truly united and fight for the same goals. But until this Day Arives I try to offer a Place of Peace and tranquility, that can shield you from the Stress of Daily Modern Life.
He said with a soft smile as he finished his tea and then looked up a bit where he could see some Christian Iconography after she had Mentioned the Religion. She brought up some really Valid Points in the Discussion and she also gave him some new ways to see certain things. And as always when he would meet a new Religion he was somehow in a State of Hyped that made him excited to learn everything he could about the religion.
Harlen: Well you are right In a way this Chappel is a bit like the Temples During the Antique Times of Old Earth where they were Consecrated to more than one Good. But you are right, I should not hold you and Doctor Saito back any longer. Just know that I am here for you Day and Night if you have some Spiritual Company. My Cabin has Direct Access to the Chapple and there is a Buzzer. I am also serving a bit as a ship counselor for all the things that People don't want to Discuss with the Doctors first. But your Right i shouldnt hold you back any longer, i am sure that Doctor Saito haves still many things to show to you.
The old man smiled and would Give Isa a Hug like a father would at the end of a Visit. He would offer the same to Mac but left the final Decision about it to her. Harlan was a warm hearted and open man, and many on the ship have seen him as some sort of Inofficial Ship Grandpa in the past. He would smile as the two Woman left the Chapple.
Isa: okay then now that we have some Energy Back let's go and visit the Biodomes. I think a little Scene Change can Benefit us both now. And I am realy happy that you and Harlan get along so well. Also please make sure to Inform about Religious Holidays and other Important Religious Dates. We will try to Give you a Free Day then or incorporate them in another way into your Work and Study schedule.
She said with a smile and would lead Mac out of the Athrium for good this time. On the way to the Biodomes, they came across many people again that crowded the Hallways of the Healing Heart. And the Closer they came to the Biodomes the more People in Casual Clothes they could see. It looked like the Biodomes were a Recreational Space for the Citizens of the Healing Heart as much as they were for the People on Faith Haven. Some of them even seemed like they were in Beach Wear and had Electrical BBQ Grills and Coolers with them.
Isa smiled as they could already see natural Light at the end of the Hallway. they could also hear the Songs of Birds, the Laughter of People, and the screams of Playing Children. And then they would be standing inside of the Biodome. Mac Could See some of the Land was used to Grow Plants and Veggies such as Potatoes, Cucumber, and Salad. While in the Distance there was a Forest with many different Trees that would Invite the people to a nice walk. she could also see Birds Flying around and if she had a keen eye she could even see some animals that enjoyed their day in the shadow of the Trees. There was also a little artificial Pond where people could Swim and Relax.
Isa: as we don't Have an Atmosphere that Protects us from Solar Radiation and the intense brightness of the Sun, our Biodomes were Built out of a Special Glass. Depending on the Location we can Adjust the tint of the glass to ensure that we always have the Right Levels of Light for our Plants and of course the Right Temperature for our people. The Glas is also specially Made to Repel Dangerous Solar Radiation and let only the good stuff through. We also do some Groupe Therapy Sessions with the More Stable Patients here, but of course, we take a Quiet Corner of the Biodome for this.
She said with a smile as she turned around to see Mac´s Reaction to the Biodomes and how they were different from the ones that she knew from Home at Faith Haven.
When Harlen asked about the possibility of receiving religious texts from the Faith of Deux, Mackenzie nodded happily. "Oh, of course. To begin, I can lend you a copy of the Sacred Codex." She bent down and rummaged in the side pocket of her backpack, pulling out a small book, about five hundred pages long. "It's a pocket edition, I didn't want to start this long trip without bringing it, but I've no problem with you having it. I've actually read it so many times that I practically know it by heart." She offered it to Harlen. "It has two parts. In the first are collected the sacred texts that are preserved from what the ancient believers of the Old Earth wrote since the First Covenant, until the arrival of Humanity to Sirius. The second contains the texts that have been written since the founding of the Church, what we call Second Covenant, until the present day." The neurologist pointed to the book, once the priest had it in his hands. "The Sacred Codex is the base book of our Faith. It tells the entire story, starting with how Deux chose Humanity to be saved from the Great Enemy, and how He gave us the Gift of the Machine, so we could build tools and technology. If you're looking to get to know Deux more closely, and what His message is, this is the book that can best help you do so." Mac bent down again to close the backpack. "Of course there are many more religious books, the ones that clerics usually use for liturgies. Since we're not a religion that emphasizes the mass conversion of non-believers, it's unusual for someone to take such an interest in our religious literature, and I'm sure that the Church will gladly collaborate. I could ask Faith Haven to send some here, but indeed I don't also know if they can get them here before we leave."
Wilson nodded when Harlen spoke of the Nomad worshipers. "These people are very lost in their path. So much so that it's very likely that there is no salvation for them." She clenched her fists in anger. "How can someone worship beings who want to destroy us as a race? It's something I can never understand. For me, these people are traitors to Humanity, and should be treated as the enemy. I'm glad you don't consider them worthy of respect either." She tried to calm her tone of voice and took a deep breath. "I understand your doubts about our goal of uniting human beings under the same cause. Really, it's not even about uniting them under the same cause, it would be enough for us to stop killing each other. It's really something complicated, I know, as I already said, Evil is among us, it's part of our nature, and it pushes us to fight against our own brothers." She shrugged her shoulders. "However Deux asks us to try, and that's what we do. We may not achieve absolute success, but every time someone understands that any conflict between humans is a trifle compared to the end that awaits us at the hands of the Great Enemy, it's a victory for the Mandate of Deux."
As Mac said goodbye to leave, Harlen gave Isabella a hug and then offered her another. The neurologist accepted it with a big smile, happy to be able to count on the good old man during this journey. That had been something unexpected for her, but she had made her feel even more comfortable and welcomed on that ship. Wilson knew she could count on Isabella for anything she needed, but there were things she could probably only deal with with someone else who had the same spiritual concerns as her.
Both women walked out into the atrium again, with Niki on Saito's shoulders, as she explained what their next destination on the visit would be. She also expressed her joy that Mac had enjoyed her little surprise from the Chapel.
"Oh yeah, it's been great getting to know this place, and Harlen too." Mac smiled happily. "He's a wonderful person, he instills a lot of peace and understanding. I think I could spend hours and hours talking with him." She looked at the atrium, reviewing the different floors with her gaze and thinking about the things she had not yet seen there. "The atrium is a place I want to explore further, but luckily I'll have plenty of time to do so. Let's go to the biodomes, then."
Mac began to feel comfortable in the hallways of that ship. In reality, it was a bit like Faith Haven, a colony with quite a few people, only a little cleaner and much more modern. However, she liked the hustle and bustle, people coming and going, going about their business... That made her feel at home. They soon arrived a large corridor that ended in a wide opening, through which they could see nature. Both doctors entered the biodome.
It was absolutely gorgeous, and Mac watched in awe as they walked along some of the paths. The space, round, would be about 30 square kilometers, covered with grass, dotted with flowers and trees, and crossed by some water canals. Even she could see groups of cropped areas in the distance, and a real pond, with some birds flying over. There were many people walking, just like them, and some were having a picnic, or bathing in the canals, and even in the pond. Everyone seemed happy and relaxed. Niki immediately jumped off Isabella's shoulders and run into the grass, rolling around and enjoying its coolness.
However, what surprised Mac the most was the light. The light... was like that of a sunny summer day in Gran Canaria. Through the large glass of the biodome she could not see the black of the void of space, nor the stars, but rather it had that blue appearance of a clear day on a planet with an atmosphere.
The neurologist pointed upwards while looking at Isabella. "Is it another holographic illusion? But... it's not possible, it's a real glass! When we approached the Healing Heart in your Dromedary I saw the biodomes from afar, and I can swear that their dome is clearly made of glass."
Saito soon explained her the operation of the dome, and more specifically the adjustable-tinted glass material that made it up. Mac could barely understand how that technology worked, but she immediately wished she could have something similar in Faith Haven. The main biodome of the settlement was also used by many settler families in their free time, for walks and picnics, but due to the constant sand storms the light from the white dwarf almost always arrived very weak and distorted. This made the lighting very yellow, giving a strange tone to everything under the biodomes. Although in the end one got used to it, Mac still remembered with nostalgia the beautiful light they enjoyed in Gran Canaria.
Wilson also appreciated that the landscape had so much water, and she expressed it this way to Isa. "In Faith Haven we've achieved an environment under the biodomes with some vegetation, perhaps not as lush as what I'm observing here, but quite leafy for such a hostile planet. However, there we don't have canals or ponds. The reason for this is that Pygar only has water supplies through underground rivers, and its extraction and obtaining isn't easy, so its use is reserved exclusively for manufacturing processes, crop irrigation and, of course, for human consumption. Except for two or three monumental fountains with cyclical water courses near the Pontifical Palace and the Temple of Deux, it's not used for decoration or for leisure." She looked around, and couldn't help but stop and smile when the aroma of a family barbecue reached her, seasoned with the screams and laughter of the children as they jumped into the pond. "It has to be a real treasure to have a place as wonderful as this within reach of all the residents of Healing Hearth. However, don't you sometimes have capacity problems? I imagine that on work days off, or on holidays, this has to be crowded."
Isa smiled and sent a Message to the Flight crew and told them to prepare one of the Orbital Dorados for Harlen and Load it full of Medicine for the psychological team that would soon arrive at Faith Haven. Like this they could Catch two birds with one stone, the Psychological Team would get the Medicine they might need for their work, and Harlen would get a Ride to the Surface to gather the things he would need for the Corner of Deux in the Chappel.
Harlen herself would smile at her as he talked about the things with Mac and he could understand that she reacted like this about the information about the Nomad Worshiping Zealots. He could understand it a lot as he himself wasn't a big Fan of Religious zealots and Fanatics. He thought that these kinds of people were misled onto a Dark Path that would bring them to Religious and Personal Ruin.
Harlen: yes I also think that these kinds of Zealots are a Danger. But I think they are like everyone that are in a cult. There is still the chance that they will come to their senses one day. And in that case, we should Help them find their way back into Society. You would be surprised how many of the Patient's husbands were in Cults or Sects. We should not Lock them out of our Hearts and Homes, instead we should show them that we are there for them and that there is a way out of the Rabbit Hole. If people think there is no way out for them then they are most likely to Stay in the Hole.
He smiled at her as he was still up for
Reintegration into the society of these People. He had a big heart and while he was definitely not friendly toward Zealots and Fanatics, he was there for those who wanted a way out. But this was a Discussion that he would love to have with her on another day. For now, He was happy to have the Book of Deux and to get more information about this new Religion, and the new addition to the Chappel. For now, he would simply say goodbye to her with a Big Friendly hug, it was one that you might get from your Grandparents and that leaves you with a Warm hand happy Feeling of being Loved and Cared for.
After the woman left he would get a Message from the Flight crew that his Shuttle was Ready for him to take him down to the Surface of the Planet. He was not surprised as he knew that Doctor Saito Could be quick to organize such things when you don't expect it.
A Short While Later in the Biodomes Isa smiled as she would see how Mac Reacts to the Biodome. She also sees how her Lovely little Cat Reacts to the Biodome. She loved that her Little Kitty was such a nature-loving one. The little Kitty was well known by all the People on the ship and soon she would have a couple of kids that would Play with her. They would Run around with the Cat and would Play. Niki would even jump into the Pond with the Kids and would simply have a good time. She didn't mind this as she knew that Niki would always return to her in the end when she had Played enough with them. Niki was Popular not only by the Patients but also by the Residents. She was almost like the Mascot of the Ship at this Point.
Isa: Oh it is, not a Hologram this is a side effect of the special Coating of the Glass. You see on a Planet you have the Atmosphere and things like the Magnetic Field that Protect you from Solar Radiation and other Dangers that come with Sunlight. If you want a more in-depth Explanation then you would need to talk with one of our engineers. I know only the basics, but he once told me that the Windows are automatically tinted depending on the Levels of Sunlight and Solar Radiation that hits them. If we were on the Other Biodome then you could see the stars as it is not facing the Sun Right now. But the maintenance of our biodome is also associated with dangers. When we do maintenance we have to Monitor the Sun Closely for Solar Storms and other solar phenomena. But a couple of weeks ago we had a case where one of our maintenance workers was outside doing work on the Starboard Biodome and we were surprised by a Solar Storm. Even though he worked at the Side opposite the Sun he was Bombarded with Solar Radiation and had severe Radiation Poisoning. Thankfully we could save him, but was a Dance on the Knife's Edge and he is still in the Hospital and getting Treatment. But it is not only dangerous to work on the Biodomes at Pygar.
She said with a Sad Smile as she was still feeling sad about this Accident. She was often at the bed of this Worker and had talked with his family. Thankfully he would Survive, but the Road to Recovery would be a long one for him. But Isa wasn't here to Depress herself and Mac. There were some Bridges that had the lead over the Canals. The canals were not only there for the people's Relaxation but also to water the Farms that were between them. Mac could see several Different Vegetables and Fruits being Planted on the Farms. Isa led her over to one of the Bridges and smiled as she could see one of the Farmers on the Field waving at him. On this Farm, they would Grow strawberries and other Fruits like Blue and Blackberrys. Isa smiled as she went to the Farmer and Bought a little bowl of Mixed Berries for them to snack and shared them with Mac.
Isa: The Farms are Managed by Families and Farmers from all over Sirius and Gallia. We give them the land and Tools that they need and of course, pay them for their work, and in return, we get 80% of the Harvest. The Rest of the Harvest is to be sold either Directly on the Farm or to Shops like Belles Cafe. The strawberries for our Cake that we have Eaten Earlier might have Come from this Farm here. The Farmers are mostly Grow Vegetables, but some of them specialize in Fruits. But we still have to Buy extra Food as the Farms can't Cover all of our Needs. But it helps us to keep the Food Costs to an Acceptable Level. And of course, it is also a Big Moral Booster for people to know that not everything that we eat and Drink has to be Imported. But we have also had some Learning Experiences as we started this Farming Experience. For example, we can not Grow Coffee or Tea Plants. Basically, everything that is would have been considered a New World Plant by old Earth Standards. We simply Can't replicate the Necessary Climate for these Plants to Grow. That is why we have decided to concentrate on Plants that haven't such special Needs. But thankfully we can Import the things that we can't grow ourselves.
Isa said with a smile as she bit into a Strawberry and ate it with great Joy. The Fruit was Sweet and Juicy and had all the Flavors that a good Strawberry should have. She would Lead Mac to a bench on a Small Platform that was hanging on the side of One of the Bridges. From there they could watch over the Canal under them and see that some people would float on Rafts and small kayaks and enjoy the Day. After a while, they would be Visited by a Rare Animal. One of the Gaian Foxes that Ran around in the Biodomes came to them and looked up as she asked for some of the Berrys. Mac could see that the Fox was Missing a Paw and had some Scars on the Face. But still, she seemed to be really friendly and would come pretty Close to the Humans.
Isa: hello there Lucille, are you begging for Berries again? Well be sure to stay away from the Fields okay, you know the Farmers don't like it when you steal the Berries from the Fields. She said with a Smile at the little fox and Threw a Blackberry for her.She is one of the Gaian Animals that Live on board. Most of them wouldn't make it on their own in the Wilds of Gaia anymore, so we gave them a permanent home on board. Most of the Animals we have here were Injured during the Gallic Occupation of Gaia. We have taken in a lot of them and took care of them. People have Smuggled Injured Gaian Animals Off the World during the Occupation and Brought them to Doctor Wilke, she had the Idea to let those who can't go back into the Wilds Live in the Biodomes. And over time the Gaian Animals got used to their Life with us Humans, and the More Intelligent Creatures like the Foxes even learned how to ask for food.
She said with a Smile as the Fox caught the Berrie with her Mouth and chewed Happily at the Tasty Treat and made some cute happy noises as she loved the Taste and was so happy by it. She also seemed to have grown a liking to Mac and would look at her with those big and Cute Eyes as she begged for some more of those sweet and Delicious berries that the two Women would have. She was a really well-behaved animal and had some Similarities to the Gaian Lynx that they had Met on Faith Haven. Lucille Also had 6 Legs and her Furr was purple like the one of Cesar. But she was much much smaller than the Lynx and was around the same size as Niki, maybe the Size of a Small Dog. But her ears were larger than those of a Cat and her eyes were too. She would Sit on her back legs and would let her Cute Fluffy Tail sweep over the floor as she tried to look as cute as she could while she hoped for that Berries.
Mackenzie smiled involuntarily as she watched Niki splash around with the children in the pond. The cat tried to climb onto their heads, the kids laughed and moved to make her fall into the water again. The kitten enjoyed splashing and playing, swimming and diving quite skillfully.
While both women watched Niki's games, Mac listened as Isa told her the secret of the strange lighting in the biodomes. Isa was surprised by the double function that the tinted glass had, given that it not only protected from the radiation of nearby stars, but was also capable of giving the impression of an atmospheric blue sky if the light hit it directly, or allowing one to see the stars and space if it didn't receive said light. Basically she could even force a day-night cycle, if desired.
The neurologist couldn't help but be saddened to hear what had happened to the biodome maintenance worker, and remember how dangerous it could be to operate outside to make repairs. "I'm very sorry, and I hope he recovers soon." She felt a shudder as she remembered the last accident they had experienced at Faith Haven, and the poor workers who were victims of it. "I already imagined that working on biodome maintenance in hostile environments is always dangerous, not just in Pygar. And as we said at Faith Haven, after that horrible moment we experienced during your visit, in a way it's something that is within the norm. They're dangerous jobs that must be done so that the rest of the people in the community can continue living and benefiting." Mac shook her head. "However, as a person who is dedicated to saving lives... it's always very hard for me to lose people in such routine jobs. I always think there should be a way to prevent these accidents."
Wilson watched as Saito's gaze grew sad when talking about the injured worker, and decided to change the subject. She knew firsthand how hard it was to see someone almost die, and probably even more so in an environment as familiar and close-knit as the Healing Heart seemed to be. The neurologist pointed towards the crop fields of the biodome. "Let's go over there, I would like to take a look at how you manage agriculture here."
As they walked along the paths next to the canals, and crossed some bridges over them, they entered the farming area. As Mac had already imagined, those picturesque canals weren't only decorative or for leisure, but were used by farmers to irrigate the fields. Some of them were working on the ground, with their straw hats on their heads as they supervised their harvesting robots, and they raised their heads when they saw them around. Isabella waved back to one of them who waved from one of the bridges in the distance.
As they walked through the fields, Saito explained the type of food that the Healing Heart produced in the biodomes, and also the system the ship had to manage the working relationship with the farmers. Wilson considered that the deal MFE had with the agricultural workers was quite beneficial for them, because they could keep a part of the harvest in addition to receiving their salary. It was a bit like the Church did with the colonists, whom it fed and housed for free in exchange for their work, but also paid them a salary.
Mac stopped and she approached a greenhouse, inside which she saw some irrigated fruits. "It's a slight different way of farming than ours." She turned to the psychologist. "In Faith Haven, the biodome assigned to agriculture work is highly mechanized and is focused to the intensive cultivation of certain vegetables. It's also entirely dedicated to that purpose, not a place for walking or enjoyment. Anyway, our objectives are also different, because you aren't trying to achieve total self-sufficiency as us, the ship don't need it." Mac approached one of the greenhouses, and observed at some strawberry plants. "You couldn't see it when we were there, but we sacrificed a lot of variety to achieve better results focusing on vegetables that can provide the best nutritional level and that also don't require too much care. Of course that greatly affects the diversity of what one can eat, and that's why the food that the Church guarantees free to the settlers is..." She smiled indulgently. "...well, a little boring."
Mac turned to Saito again and shrugged. "But nevertheless, with our system everyone can meet their food needs, while also being self-sufficient in doing so. Besides, in order to acquire other tastier or more exotic foods, we've the private market and private restaurants, which import products from outside the planet. Of course this products are more expensive, but this way anyone can stay well-fed constantly and free on a daily basis, and allow themselves a little joy on special days, paying it with their salaries." Mac waved her hand, as if dismissing everything she had said before. "But, don't get me wrong. I understand that the situation of Faith Haven and Healing Heart are completely different. I think both are examples of how two communities in inhospitable environments have been able to find a system to feed their members." The neurologist opened her arms, encompassing the fields around her with a gesture. "And, honestly, what you've achieved here is wonderful. How have you managed to combine a recreational and leisure environment with cultivation... This is a tremendously welcoming place. It reminds me so much of Gran Canaria..."
Mac followed Isabella towards one of the bridges that crossed the canals, and they both sat on a bench that was placed on a hanging platform, secured to the side of the bridge. While Isa ate some strawberries and berries she had bought from one of the greenhouses' farmer, the neurologist enjoyed the small cool breeze that rose from the canal under her legs. From that slightly elevated platform she had a fairly wide view of the biodome, and she was distracted for a while watching people passing by on the paths, bathers cooling off in the canal, and even some people riding in boats. That landscape was so beautiful and realistic that it was hard to think that right now they were really on a ship in the middle of the void of Omicron Theta. Only the lattice of metal beams that gave integrity to the glass of the biodome brought her back to reality, when she looked towards the sky.
Suddenly, Wilson noticed something small moving at her feet. She looked over there and saw how a small six-feet purple fox had approached them and was sitting on her hind legs staring at them. Isabella seemed to know who it was and called her by her name, Lucille. While the psychologist offered some berries to the animal, Mac realized that one of its middle legs was amputated at the joint. Saito soon explained to her that it was a Gaian animal rescued from the times of the Gallic occupation. Mac understood that the six-legged body structure and purple color were probably characteristics that were repeated in animals from Planet Gaia.
Wilson soon noticed that Lucille was watching her carefully while she ate the berries that Saito was giving her, and she turned to the psychologist. "It's a beauty. Poor thing, thank to Deux these animals have an extra pair of legs. I wonder what would happen to her." She took a few berries from Isabella's handful and offered one to the fox. Lucille immediately approached her and ate from the hand, without any fear, looking at her with tremendously expressive eyes. Then she gave a little yelp and sat down again, asking for more. "Wow, you really like berries, huh?" Mackenzie laughed happily, as she caressed the top of the fox's head, offering her more fruit. "You're a greedy lady, Lucille, but it doesn't matter, you can eat them all."
Wilson finished the handful of berries, and watched as the fox hovered around her, until she jumped onto the bench. There she lay on her back, next to the neurologist, offering the belly. Mac simled again and began scratching the animal's belly, while turned to Isabella, surprised. "She's so sweet, but it surprises me a little. Well, I guess she's very used to humans, living here in the biodome. But is a wild animal, right? I mean, she's not domesticated and it's the first time she sees me. You seem to know her well, is it normal for her to be so... affectionate with me?"
Isa smiled as she sat there with her and watched how The little Fox got comfortable at her side and would act as if she knew her for her entire life. even when the Animals were friendly towards humans it was still a rare thing for Lucille to be this Trustworthy around a Total Stranger. But Isa would think this was because of her, and because Lucille knew her for a long time even when the Fox would have never invited Isa herself to cuddle her belly. Lucille would make cute fox sounds to show Mac that she was totally happy and would love for the Human to pet her.
Isa: oh yes he will be fine soon. And he is also one of our Patients that we will see for Therapy once he gets out of the hospital. He will also not be allowed to have any kind of Work in Space Suits for a While till we as his Psychologists give him the Green Light for this.
She said and smiled at her question about the Farms and the Agriculture. But before she could answer her she would burst into laughter as she saw how Niki and some Children would float in the Canal under them and how the Kids had a little water Battle while the Cat would Watch the Children from the Bow of a Boat like a Admiral that watched over her fleet. Isa couldn't help herself but laugh about this sight. But this would also lead to the fact that her cat looks up and finds her. The Litle Kitty would jump on land and would then make her way towards the two women. Niki was still Petty wet and would lay in the sun to get dry. The Cat didn't seme to mind about the fox that lay next to Mac and would beg for Berries and Cuddles. It looks like the two already knew each other.
Isa: well yes we have used the help of Farmers and Architects as well as Biologists and Specialist from Orbital Spa and Cruise, to find the Perfect Balance between the Practical and Relaxation Needs of the Citizens and Patients. It took a while and some Rebuilding during the first months till we found the Right Combination that everyone could Live with. I have read the Records of Dr Wilke about this and she Described all the Problems and the Obstacles they had to overcome. But in the end, they found a Solution that would benefit all. Some of the Farmers also Live here in the Biodome, but not all of them. Some Prefer to live in the Green, but others prefer the Apartments like the Rest of the Citizens. We also have some Cabins here at some more Quiet Places for those who take a little break from everyday stress.
Isa said with a smile as she heard about the Food Situation in Faith Haven. She could Understand that it was a Problem for a Colony like Faith Haven to get Enough Fresh Produce from their own Production and that it had the Highest Priority to be as independent as possible. Isa could Understand that the Situation for them was different from everything that a Mobile Colony like the Healing Heart would Experience. But she hoped that the Possible Deal with Orbital Spa and Cruise could Improve their Supply Situation. Isa had known Orbital very well in the past and knew they offered Fair Deals for their Partners. Isa knew that the Chairwoman of Orbital Spa and Cruise was a Tough Woman on the Outside but she was a really friendly woman once you would know her better. Isa knew that she would give the Colony of Faith a Fair Deal that would let both Sides have a Profit. But she would smile as she saw how the little fox would cuddle onto Mac as she would enjoy her Company. The little fox seemed to love how Mac cuddled her and would make even more Cute Sounds as she was having a good time.
Isa: Oh don't worry I am sure that Meyer and the other in the Clergy can make a good Deal with Orbital. But that will be a Thing for them to Clear, you will be focusing on your studies. But from all I know about Chairwoman Cross she will give the Colony a Fair Deal.
She said with a smile as she scratched Niki between the ears as she lay in the sun to get Dry again. The small Kitty didn't seem to have any problems with the Slightly Larger Fox this might also be because the two knew each other already. Lucille would also be way more Distracted by Mac and the attention she got from her. Isa would listen to her questions about Lucille and her extra Legs.
Isa: Well you would be surprised how many of them can Learn to Live with such Injuries even when they have only 3 Legs Left. We often try to give them Prosthetics but not all of them accept this or get used to Fake Limbs. But Animals are Pretty Resilient and can adapt to many new things. And it is not like they have Many Natural Predators here that they would need to fear, I mean in Difference to Planet Gaia where they would be an Easy Target.
Isa Chuckles as she sees how the Fox begs for more Berries and looks up at her with big eyes. The little one was crazy about berries and seemed to love how they tasted. Thankfully Gaian Foxes could eat anything that they wanted to, no matter if it was Meat, Fruits, or even Vegetables. The Gaian Foxes are very versatile in their Diets and Preferences. Of course, it helped that she would get a Special Diet from the Animal Welfare Team on board.
Isa: They get good food from our Animal Caretakers, but our Little Lucille here is well-known to Steal Berries from the Farmers whenever she can. She is known as the Berrie Thief. But she happily doesn't do too much damage so the Farmers mostly Tolerate her, or even Bribe her so she leaves them alone. I can tell you that she sometimes allows us to pet her, or rub her between the ears. But she has never before allowed someone to touch her belly. A belly is the most vulnerable spot of a Fox so it's a pretty rare thing that she allows you this is pretty Rare.
Just to Prove this she would reach her hand out to Lucille and the fox would immediately hide her belly. But Isa would only do this to Prove a Point and wouldn't really Touch her. She would only do this to prove a point that the Fox would Be a bit more Trustworthy towards Mac than she was towards other Humans.
Isa: Lucille was found by our Contacts, she had Stepped into a Trap that the Gallics had Placed around one of their Mines. The Gallics have Hunted them for Fun, the Sick Bastards saw this as some kind of Sport. I am happy that they are no longer on Gaia but I fear they have done a lot of damage that will take a long time to Repair. It Took Lucille a while to get used to walking without her Paw, but she is a Survivor and a Fighter just like you. Maybe she Recognizes this in you, maybe she knows that you two are the same.
Isa said with a smile as she had a feeling that these two might have a Deeper Connection than they would both Realize now. Isa knew that Mac and Lucille were both hurt at the time and that they could be good for each other. She was sure that they would see each other a lot during the time that Mac would be on board.
As she continued to pet Lucille, Mac made a mental note to suggest to Meyer on their next Neural Net conference that the Church get in touch with OS&C, and President Cross, as soon as possible. Of course she would let the Monsignora and the rest of the clergy handle the matter themselves, as Isa had suggested, but she wanted to remind Greta not to forget to make the appropriate calls. From what the psychologist had said, Faith Haven could benefit from a wide variety of products, both food and non-food, by dealing with OS&C, and that was important for the colony, both for its economy and for the well-being of its inhabitants. The more comfort and variety, the better mental health they would have. She would try to make a videocall with Faith Haven in the evening, after dinner, and she would also take advantage of the opportunity to request information on their most seriously ill patients.
When Mac thought about what Isabella had told her about Lucille's rescue, and about how the animals on Planet Gaia had been treated by the Galllics, she felt very sad. She looked at the little fox, and her severed leg, and wondered how anyone could cause such pain and harm to a defenseless animal, just for pleasure or amusement. Although there were some faith believers of Gallic origin in the Church, such as the Minister of Commerce, Monsignor Richelieu, Mac didn't know much about Gallian customs, but she wasn't surprised that they included something like that. She knew that hunting as mere entertainment was something practiced in many cultures.
In Bretonia, for example, the House that saw her birth, there was a disgusting tradition of 'sport' hunting with packs of dogs, inherited from the times of Old Earth, and practiced by the wealthy classes and royalty. An animal was released into the wild, giving it a certain advantage, and then the participants would chase it on repulsor motorcycles, accompanied by a horde of furious and hungry dogs, trained to catch up and tear apart the poor victim. The unfortunate animal usually died amidst great terror and suffering, only to the delight of the human participants. These practices seemed barbaric and despicable to the neurologist, and in her opinion, an animal should never be mistreated. When one of them had to be killed for food, it should be done in the most painless and quick way possible, and of course hunting only for fun was certainly unacceptable for her.
"I can't avoid thinking about what Lucille must have gone through." Wilson scratched the fox under the chin and looked at Saito. "As a doctor, and especially as a doctor at Faith Haven, I've seen many accidents that resulted in amputations. I know how a human being feels when they violently lose an arm or a leg, it's terrible. The physical recovery is complicated, but above all the most difficult is the psychological recovery. The brain isn't designed to accept losing parts of your own body, especially those that are more visible and evident, and it responds in very strange ways. Many people become depressed, and there are those who can never overcome the situation." Mackenzie looked back at the fox, who was yelping softly with happiness at her caresses, and felt very sad. She headed towards Isabella again. "I'm not a biologist, and I only have knowledge about human physiological behavior, but I imagine that animals, and specifically animals as intelligent as Lucille, feel and suffer in ways very similar to how we do. I'm glad she could be rescued and can live in such a wonderful place like this, but I would have preferred that there had been no need to rescue her." The doctor shook her head. "In truth, humans carry evil within us, just as the Sacred Codex of Deux says. It's the only thing that can explain why someone would torture and mutilate an innocent being for pure pleasure."
A wet feeling on her hand distracted Mac from her thoughts, and she realized that the little vixen had sat up on the bench and was licking her hand lovingly. The neurologist smiled in amusement and let her do so for a few seconds, then petted the vixen between the large ears. The two beings stared into each other's eyes for a few moments, and Mackenzie felt as if Lucille were able to probe her soul and somehow understand how she felt. Likewise, as she focused her gaze on the animal's pupils, the doctor perceived for a millisecond a kind of wave of warm, welcoming, loving feelings that didn't come from herself, but they seemed a reaction from the vixen to the neurologist's own mood.
Mac startled, and removed his hand from Lucille's head rather quickly. "What the hell...?" She whispered, while noticed how the fox was watching her, with the head tilted, although without fear. "Well... You're an interesting lady, Lucille." She turned to Isabella, some shock in her expression, but she smiled. "These Gaian animals are curious... I don't really know how to express it... but for a moment I felt..." Mac looked again at Lucille, who had lain back down on the bench and was absentmindedly scratching one of her ears. Then turned back again at Isabella. "I've felt like she could understand me, and I could understand her. On a very basic emotional level, of course, but it's been..." Mac laughed nervously "Well, some of it has been terrifying, although also very exciting. Are these animals capable of doing that? Because if not, I'm afraid I might be suffering from an aneurysm."
Isa Smiled and ate some more of the Sweet Berries as she saw how Mac and Lucille interacted with each other. This was such a sweet scene to watch and Isa had some admiration in her eyes as she saw how the little fox Reacted to all this Love and Care that she got from Mac. She saw how the fox relaxed in Mac´s Presence and would enjoy the time with the Doctor. Isa herself knew how Mac felt when she saw the Missing Leg on Lucille's Body. She was also shocked when she saw the injuries that the animals from Gaia had sustained for the first time.
Isa: I have seen many Animals Adapt to a Missing Limb much Better than Humans do. But of course, I can't talk to them and ask them how they feel. Believe me, I would love to have conversations with Niki sometimes. I mean I Talk with her anyway but she can't answer me, at least not with words. But you are right that such a Traumatic Event can also be hard for Animals. We have Specialists on board who take care of the Animals and are Trained in Animal Medicine and psychology. I will introduce you to one of them later. But our Little Lucille here is really tough and adaptable and gets used to new situations pretty Fast. And yes you can find evil anywhere, but we try our best to keep this out of the Healing Heart.
She said with a smile as she watched the two of them some more. But all the attention from the Fox made Niki a bit jealous and the little cat would soon Jump in Isa´s Lap to get some attention and cuddles from her human. Isa would be giving her some belly Rubs and would scratch her behind the ears were she loved it the most. While she watched Mac and Lucille. Isa got big eyes as she heard what Mac Described to her. She had heard about such things from others that had a Gaian Companion but she had never seen or experienced it herself.
Isa: No no you're not Crazy....I have read about this but never seen it myself. There is an Old Story from the First Biologists that Studied the Animals on Planet Gaia. It says that Gaian Animals have the ability to a Form of Psychic Connection, a very basic one but indeed a connection. It says that this was what caused the Gaian Movement to Form, they Realized that the Animals that they Studied had a Higher Intelligence than those that we are brought with us from Earth. But we should maybe see if we can meet with one of our Biologists who looks after the Gaian Animals.
Isa said and would get her Communicator out and would Contact Doctor Trevers to see if he had some time to meet them. After a while, she would get an Awnser and smile as she looked at Mac.
Isa: Doctor Travers has some time for us. he is over at the Forrest and currently feeds the other Foxes. Looks Like our Little Lucille is Rather Preferred to seek her own Food Today.
She said with a chuckle as she threw another Strawberry to the Fox and saw how she caught her in mid-air and chewed with great pleasure. Meanwhile, had Niki taken her usual Place on Isa´s Shoulder. The Little Kity was still a bit Wet, but under the warm Rays of the Sun was it Pretty refreshing to have this Wet Cat Cooling her Shoulders. She would give Niki another rub between her ears and would then wait for Mac and Lucille to Follow her. The Way to the Forest Area where they would meet the Doctor and the other Foxes would cost them around 10 to 15 Minutes of Walking. They had tried their best to Replicate the Natural environment that the Gaian Animals had lived in before. As they entered the Forest they would see Birds flying and Jumping through the treetops, some animals that Resembled Apes, and many other animals that enjoyed this Habitat. They would Find Doctor Travers sitting on a Camping Chair in the middle of a clearing in the Forest around him were about half a Dozen Foxes that made excited sounds as they got feed by the doctor. Today he would feed them some Chicken Breasts and this was always a Special Day for the Foxes. The Foxes would get all kinds of Food from Meat over Berries and Vegetables to Insects and Fish, Gaian Foxes would basically eat Anything that they could get into their Paws.
Doctor Travers was a Middle Aged Man who had Brown Hair that showed the first Signs of Aging and had some Grey Parts in it. He had some Smile lines on his face that showed that he was a happy person that Laughed often and would Enjoy Life. Isa waved at him and he waved back at her. But this little distraction was all that one of the Foxes needed to Steal an Extra Piece of Chicken and Run off with it into the Woods. The little thief was Instantly Chased by some of the other Foxes that wanted a piece of the delicious loot. Lucille would simply walk over to the Doctor and sit there to get a Piece of Chicken as well.
Travers: Hello you must be Mac? Doctor Saito has Informed me about your experience with our Little Lucille here. I have to tell you that you Realy a Lucky one, i have worked with these Animals for years now and I never had such an Experience. Sure they are Really empathetic and try to cheer you up when your Sad, but to experience a Real Connection like you have is one of the most Rare things out here. If you want I can tell you all that I know about this.
He said he would Give Lucille the Chicken and would then Give the Rest of the Chickens to the Foxes that were still waiting. He would get some more Camping Chairs for Mac and Isa and would Offer them something to Drink so they could Talk in comfort.
The strange experience with Lucille had left Mac somewhat worried. Isabella said that it was something she had already read, but how was it possible that the fox could make a psychic link with her? Could she read her thoughts? Could she know what she was going to do before she did it? She didn't like that at all. The neurologist was a person who usually found it difficult to fully trust others, because she had the feeling that when another person knew your true feelings, it was easier for them to control you, or to hurt you. Therefore, that another living being, even if it was just an animal, could get into her head in that way and violate her privacy, made her feel quite uncomfortable.
Lucille was absolutely adorable, that was true, and she didn't seem to want to hurt Mac in any way. Even though she tried to ignore it, Wilson felt connected to the little vixen in some way, and the fact that she had chosen her to establish a connection was quite exciting, as well as making her feel special. After all, Isa had said that she had known Lucille for a long time, and she had never had the fox approach her like that. However, even though she didn't believe Lucille wanted to harm her, not knowing how this strange power worked made her distrust and a bit scared. An alien animal was accessing her mind and her feelings, and although it seemed that in return she showed hers, she didn't know what to think. This psychic ability was Lucille's, not hers, and therefore, Mackenzie felt at the vixen's mercy, a little helpless.
That's why she was relieved when Isa suggested that she turn to a doctor colleague who had more knowledge and experience with Gaian animals "I think it's a good idea, Isa. I need someone to explain to me what's going on." Wilson turned to the vixen, who was watching her silently. "Don't take this the wrong way, Lucille, but I need a little more information about this. I know it will be normal for you, but for me it isn't."
According to Isabella, the Gaian animal expert, a doctor named Travers, was located not far away in the same biodome. The two women set off in that direction, accompanied by Niki, and followed at a short distance by the little fox. They crossed the bridge again and headed along the paths towards the wooded area that could be seen in the distance, near the glass walls of the biodome.
After a few minutes of walking, during which they came across several residents of the ship who were wandering there, they turned off along a smaller path that took them into the most wooded area. The forest wasn't very big, obviously, since it was in the limited area of the bidome, but it was large enough to accommodate several species of animals. Mac could see several birds and also other creatures she had never seen before, jumping between the branches of the trees or running through the undergrowth. Some of them had the recognizable purple color that was repeated in the Gaian animals.
As they continued walking towards the interior of the grove, Mackenzie thought she saw a Gaian lynx in the bushes, like the one they had seen in Faith Haven, in the tent of that ex-Corsair named Lola. The animal was half hidden in the leaves, and when they approached, it simply disappeared into the thicket, almost without making a sound. The neurologist remembered that strange couple that Lola and Cesar, the lynx, formed. Lola had said something about how they had been life partners for about 40 years. Would the two of them have a psychic bond, like Lucille had tried to form with her? If so, it couldn't be a bad thing, since the Cretan dressmaker and the lynx seemed to have a really deep friendship. Having an animal companion seemed to be a nice, useful thing to do. One only had to look at Isabella and Niki, for example, who were inseparable, and that's keeping in mind that Niki was just a regular cat, with no ability to bond in that way.
Still, Mac had always been a very logical and procedural person, not given to jump into ideas she didn't understand. It might be that establishing a psychic connection with Lucille was something enriching, but she couldn't properly evaluate it until someone explained to her in a technical way what it meant, and the consequences it would have.
As the neurologist thought, the small path they were following led out into a clearing in the trees, and when Wilson looked she could see a man about 35-40 years old sitting in the center, in a folding chair. Around him were several Gaian foxes waiting for him to throw them the piece of meat he was holding in his hands. It seemed that they had finally found Dr. Travers, and the two women approached him slowly, so as not to disturb the peace of the moment. However, Travers looked up in their direction as soon as they were about 20 metres away, and Isa took the opportunity to greet him with a smile. The doctor returned the greeting, distracting for a second, and one of the foxes pounced on the piece of meat, snatching it from her and running off into the wooded area, pursued by some of the other foxes. Mac watched as Lucille, who had been following her around the whole time, ran up to the doctor, but instead of taking advantage of the situation and stealing meat, she sat in front of him, begging for food with her big eyes.
Dr. Travers stood up to properly greet Mac. He was a nice guy who seemed happy surrounded by those Gaian animals that were yelping and running around him, and had a bright and sincere smile. Isabella had previously informed him of what had happened with Lucille, and he congratulated Wilson on being able to experience a psychic connection with a Gaian fox. He seemed quite surprised that it had happened, and acknowledged that it was extremely unusual.
Mac was glad to talk to someone who had worked with Gaian animals for so long, and Travers' attitude reassured her a little. The man didn't seem worried, just interested and somewhat excited to be able to witness such a particular case like that. She thanked him for offering to tell her what he knew about the bonds to the Gaian species. "Thank you for seeing me so quickly Dr. Travers, and it's great that you know so much about this. I'm still overwhelmed by what's happened, and I don't even know how I'm supposed to feel. It's been something... completely unexpected." The neurologist shook her head. "I didn't even know these animals had these... abilities."
Travers nodded, and with a slight gesture of apology, he went to the sack of meat next to the chair, and threw its contents at the foxes, including Lucille. As the animals feasted, screaming in delight, the man walked over to an electric cart with all-terrain wheels parked nearby. It was a small vehicle, only two-seater, with a short cargo area in the back, in which the doctor had several bags of food and some more folding chairs. He left the empty bag there and took two more chairs, which he placed next to his own. Then sat down, making a friendly gesture with his hand inviting Isa and Mac to follow suit.
Travers bent down and picked up a thermos that was placed under his chair, along with a package of paper cups."I have some hot coffee here if you'd like a drink." The two women nodded, and the man filled two cups, handing them over. "It's from Belle's, I always stop by early in the morning to get my thermos refilled, and I still have half left." Travers smiled and looked at Mac. "What do you want to know about Gaian foxes?"
Mackenzie opened her arms, as if what she wanted was beyond reach. "Well... whatever you can tell me about the psychic bond. The experience has not been painful, nor unpleasant, and the feelings I've been able to experience from Lucille have been positive. At the time my mind was processing some rather sad thoughts, and that's when it happened." Mac pinched herself the chin as she tried to explain. "It was as if she first entered my mind and probed me, to understand what my mood was, and then she inserted her own feelings into me, as if she wanted me to understand what she wanted to convey to me. It was something... warm, welcoming, as if she were giving me a... mental hug." She shrugged, a little overcome. "I don't know if I'm expressing myself correctly, but I don't know how to define it better. I would have honestly loved to have electrodes attached to my head and Lucille's right then and there, and monitor our brain activity. As a neurologist, it would be the easiest way for me to understand it." Wilson smiled, nervous, looking this time at the little vixen, who was still calmly eating her piece of meat, some distance away, but without losing sight of her. "However, as much as I would like to understand the workings of this, what I'm most worried about is... well, my privacy. Lucille has easily entered my mind. Does that mean she can read my thoughts whenever she wants? I know she was probably just trying to help and comfort me, but... I don't like it when anyone can read my thoughts without asking my permission. Is there any way to prevent that?"
