As we finish up 2018 with one of the biggest updates of Discovery in years, Pyres of Remembrance, we've also decided to release a new version of the launcher. Internally called DSLauncherV2, the new version of the Discovery Launcher is the result of a complete rebuild effort spearheaded by @Laz that retains all the functionality of the old launcher while giving us a better path forward to extend and improve the launcher going forward.
What's different?
Major feature improvements include:
- Categories and favourites for your accounts
- An account export system that consistently works
- News graphics on the splash page
- We actually have the source code for this one
- Experimental settings (coming soon)
This is a complete rewrite by @Laz focused on better code and better extensibility, so the launcher can be improved iteratively as features are developed and implemented.
How do I install it?
Pretty easy! Just close your current Discovery Launcher and start it again. You'll get a prompt (it may be behind whatever windows you have open, on some systems) to update the launcher, similar to the one you may have seen after installing Discovery. Let it update and you'll be presented with DSLauncher 2.0. If you don't get this prompt, run the "DSSelfPatch.exe" program in your Discovery Freelancer install folder.
I have a problem!
This is new software and we don't have a massive suite of test machines, so while we've done what we can to sort out bugs, your experience may vary. Let us know either in this thread or in the bug reports thread if you encounter a bug. We don't expect any catastrophic problems, but just in case, have you tested your backups recently? (just kidding)
- @Laz - Bulk of the programming work
- @Kazinsal - Aesthetic improvements, bugfixes, graphics
- @Alley - Original DSLauncher design and implementation
- @Alex. - Reversing as much of the original DSLauncher as possible
The categories feature wasn't super intuitive to use. What would've been better imo if a form that opens on the righthand side to edit name/description/category on the fly. Categories also don't populate in the dropdown menu until the program is restarted.

I am aware of these issues and the annoyance it has. As you've probably seen in the Dev chat, I'm still working on this and trying to implement the experimental tree view.
