The leadership shut everything down because they felt the story devs were deliberately screwing over Rheinland lawfuls by forcing them into a Sigma war for the benefit of Bretonia, among other things. Let's not get into how the Sigma War came entirely out of left field because of how close Rheinland and Kusari were, down to having 90% techcell on each other's civilian shippies.
(in lore, a Rheinland fighting Kusari isn't a Rheinland rolling up with its now most powerful military in Sirius and eating Bretonia in one fell swoop after Bretonia just barely fends off Gallia by the skin of its teeth)
Rather than play that game, they just took their ball and went on with their lives away from Discovery, disbanding the factions because none of the players in that faction would still be around as that faction.
Well that's not true considering the Sigma war was over by then. And no, it was NOT for Bretonia's benefit. The Rheinland lawfuls had called it a day with the Sigma war, and the devs agreed. Reluctantly, but they did agree nonetheless. Thus with that aspect of discovery being done, albeit not in the way the devs wanted, they moved on. The catalyst for the Rheinland lawfuls pulling the plug was a PoB dispute which blew up into a 'staff are corrupt' dispute which I don't fully understand myself, only that whatever the issue, they talked themselves into leaving. Whether it be right or wrong I don't know and frankly I don't have the patience to find out.
They (Rheinland players) built a player owned base without any IFF in GMG's claimed space. GMG declared siege. Rheinland players decided to put a Kishiro IFF on this POB, and told GMG to cancel the siege or they will report it to Game Masters (Rule 3.5 Threatening with sanctions). GMG did not cancel the siege as the POB was still built without their approval. Staff warned (https://discoverygc.com/forums/showthrea...tid=176004) several involved Rheinland players over it, and eventually they decided to quit the game and disband most of Rheinland lawful factions with them as a revenge.
Just re-create the faction with the same tag and name if it means that much to you. Nobody can stop you from doing so. I do not see the issue here.

I guess the issue isn't so much re-creating/re-founding the faction, the issue is more why someone would do that in the first place. It is an incredibly selfish move.
Ending the one of the oldest disco faction with just one line is very sad indeed.
The RM was actually the only thing that actually kept me playing the game in the beginning, i have met the very best people on discovery in this faction. Funny that some of them posted here in the factions goodbye note.
I hope there are going to be factions that will give other people the feeling of being part of something bigger as it gave me back then.

We're working on it.
