They have no more business being trade ships than VHFs. Arguably less.
Not everyone has Freighters kitted out for combat or even use them for combat (my mining freighters have a mining array and 1 or 2 guns to shoot the cannister after mining).
And some people do use freighters for trading (probably goes against everything PvPers expect). Why make them PvP Gods where they are designed to carry 'Freight'?

This is too colloquial for my taste. I expect a more ... "professional" wording from the official discovery staff team.

Attack any ship to defend Allies, except while flying Cruisers, Battlecruisers, or Battleships.

Corporations can now drag their militaries/polices outside of their ZoI and they can defend them?

I know the definition of a freighter, and I know that you could deliberately leave slots unused on one. But they are probably the single most survivable and combat-capable snub class in the game. Nothing forces freighter players to fight in one, but they are more than capable of putting up a fight if required. I believe the rules should eventually move away from having special sections dedicated to transport ships in general as we figure out ways to make transport both more capable of defending themselves and (more importantly) capable of lasting a long enough time for other players to defend them. As it is, transports are given these special protections because of how fragile they are. Their "win" condition is to dock. Therefore they do not "die" when they dock, unlike other ships. Freighters play by a different set of rules where they thrust at 200 m/s making them only truly targets for fighters, bombers and other freighters, while at the same being no less powerful than any of those classes.
Since freighters are already in a state where giving them a special, protected role in the game doesn't really make a lot of sense, they can already be shifted into the combat ship category.

you don't need to directly combat them. but you can mount missiles etc to increase your likelihood of surviving
you can use its strength to run away and survive what transports cant, since you can dodge AND incredibly tanky for a long period of flight.
I would quite happily have Trade Ships that dock count as 'PvP' Dead, most never make the docking points anyway.
Devs made 'Freighters' the PvP Gods that they are supposedly, they can also get rid of those capabilities.

Oh yeah, it's true! Convoys just got way more awesome! Not just corporations, we can e.g. have joint exercises with [GN] and [RM] and can defend each other anywhere in either Zoi!
